Mantel: FDC-004 in Yellow Shanxi
Quarried in China, Yellow Shanxi is a popular choice for the carving of statues, fountains and of course fireplaces. Giving nice clean edges when carved, it can be finished in either a polished or honed finish.
This Particular model caught the eye of our managing director back in the late 2000’s while on a business trip in northern China. From speaking with the stone workers, he learnt that the size of the fireplace was decided by the size of the block available from the quarry. In this case it was a very large block available. The final fireplace is approximately 3.4m wide x 2.6m high and weighs in at over 6000kg.
Once completed it was crated and shipped over to the FDC headquarters in Dinton, where it remained in its box until April 2016. After the best part of a decade sealed away, the decision was made to begin the build. How many men does it take to put up a fireplace? In this case 3 (and a forklift). After 4 days, countless cups of tea, and the occasional (pack of) chocolate digestives, the fireplace was complete.
In 2019, due to moving premises to our new offices and warehouse, we had the task of taking down our ‘pièce de résistance’ and moving it to its new home. We took each piece down individually then cleaned and re-crated it. It is now safely sealed away in our new warehouse in Drews Yard, Dinton.
